Making Room: One Church, Four Mums, Nine Kids and a Whole Lot of Love

In a week that included World Refugee Day, I’d love to introduce you to Hilary and share her story of joyfully connecting with some local people seeking asylum.

Hilary worships at an Anglican church on the outskirts of a small market town. The church often welcomes people seeking asylum, as there’s a large hotel within walking distance that houses them. Hilary had always tried to make them feel at home, but wondered whether she could do more.

Over recent months, four mothers — with nine children between them — began attending regularly. They were from Nigeria, Tanzania, and Guyana. Knowing how hard it must be to live in a hotel room without a kitchen, Hilary asked one of the mums what the food was like. She wasn’t surprised by the unenthusiastic response.

Hilary, who loves cooking for her own family, offered an idea:
“Here’s the deal. You give me a list of ingredients, I’ll shop, and you come to our house and cook Nigerian food — then we’ll all eat together.”

The first time they came, the mums were so excited just to be in a kitchen again after six months or more of living in one room. For that first meal, thirteen of them sat down to eat. A dozen came again the second time.

One of the guests was a young woman expecting her first child — preparing to give birth alone in an unfamiliar country.

Hilary, who has medical training as well as being a mum of four and a grandmother, offered to be a support. She gave the young woman, Naomi, her mobile number and told her to text when labour began — and if she could, she’d come.

Sure enough, late one Friday evening, Hilary got the message. She was able to go and support Naomi in labour. Amid much joy — and feeling like she was pushing right alongside her — Hilary helped welcome the baby at 3.30am!

What a beautiful thing: to offer someone company in one of life’s most transformative moments.

Hilary’s story perfectly captures so much of what Activate is about — the natural sharing of God’s love in everyday life.
