A-level results day: what I wish I’d known

Rhiannon chats with her sister Sarah about Results Day, what she wishes she’d known, and the advice she’d give to others facing it now.

Rhiannon:

So Sarah, let’s start with this — what’s one thing you wish you’d known before you got your results?

Sarah:

Honestly? That your results don’t define you. At the time, it can feel like everything rides on getting the right grades — like your whole future depends on it. But in reality, whatever your results, there’s always a way forward. There are always options.

I wish someone had told me not to let a result dictate how I felt about myself or how I behaved around other people. It’s not you that’s being judged — it’s just your knowledge on a particular subject at that point in time. And let’s be real, exam-taking just isn’t everyone’s strength.

Rhiannon:

That’s such a good reminder. Especially for people who didn’t find the academic route easy. What would you say to someone who feels disappointed with their results?

Sarah:

I’d say — don’t let disappointment settle in and stay. The enemy can use both your highs and your lows, so don’t give him that satisfaction. Whatever your result, thank God for it. Be humble, be content, and keep moving forward.

It’s not a shameful thing to ask for help or advice, either. Speak to someone you trust — someone a bit further ahead in life or study — and ask, “What’s next? What could I have done differently? What should I consider now?” You don’t have to figure it all out alone.
